VR meets psychotherapy: successfully treating social phobias
CME Webinar with Continuing Education Credits
In this CME-certified webinar, practical case discussions are the focus. Together, we analyze complex patient trajectories, discuss challenges, and share best practice experiences in the use of VRET for social phobias. The emphasis is on collegial exchange and the targeted transfer of therapeutic strategies from the virtual to the real world.
Social phobias are among the most common anxiety disorders in psychotherapeutic practice. Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) opens up new, effective avenues: social anxiety situations can be simulated in a realistic, controlled, and individually tailored manner and therapeutically addressed.
The webinar is aimed at licensed therapists who have already gained initial experience with VRET and wish to deepen their competencies in its application. The goal is to sustainably improve the treatment of social anxiety – through informed reflection, practical impulses, and new perspectives.
Current literature recommendation for further study:
This meta-analysis, published in March 2025, examined 17 randomized controlled trials on the effectiveness of VRET for social anxiety disorders. The results showed that VRET was significantly more effective than waitlist control groups in reducing anxiety symptoms both immediately after the intervention and in follow-up assessments. Furthermore, the combination of VRET with cognitive behavioral therapy was particularly effective. However, the study emphasizes the need for further high-quality and large-scale studies with long-term follow-up.
